Young people drank nearly half of all wine in the U.S. last

A fascinating post in Fusion (URL below) just showed that nearly 79M Americans from the age of 21-38 drank over 160M cases of wine in 2015. This accounted for over 42% of all wine consumed.

Interestingly there was a large gender gap that was found in the study, with the surge being mostly led by women who nearly accounted for a 20% increase since 2014 and 57% of wine volume in the use. Ethnic diversity was also noted in the study, in addition to an increasing frequency of wine drinkers who would consider themselves as knowledgeable about the subject.

However, there is still a major difference between wine and other types of alcohol consumption in the U.S. 40% of young adults drink beer, wine and spirits at least several times a year vs. only 4% of young adults drinking wine several times a a year or more. Of nearly $216 Billion in consumer spending on alcoholic beverages, only $32B was on wine.  Nonetheless, it appears that there is a major shift in demographics and with new millennials engaging in classier and personally more tasteful alcoholic choices.
