Winston Churchill & Champagne

Continuing the series of posts about famous people and wines, I'd like to write about Winston Chuchill.

Chuchill was an inveterate drinker. When visiting the White House, he requested of the butler that he receive a tumbler of sherry before breakfast, a couple of glasses of Scotch before lunch, and French Champagne and brandy before bedtime.

He was associated with one brand of Champagne in particular: Pol Roger. The brand even still has a quote by Churchill on its homepage ("My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best"), and introduced a Pinot noir-dominant Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill in 1984. Pol-Roger was Churchill's favorite Champagne for years, particularly after he met Odette Pol-Roger at the end of World War II. The family would ship him a case of it every year at his birthday.

It's worth noting that Pol-Roger was already a highly respected brand in the UK before Churchill's patronage, serving as the official Champagne for royal coronations etc. The business remains in family hands and regularly receives top ratings for its wines.
