From Hollywood to Wine Country: Francis Ford Coppola

While Francis Ford Coppola is perhaps best known for directing blockbuster hits like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, he also has an apparent penchant for winemaking!  He and his wife, Eleanor, maintain two wineries: the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyersville (Sonoma) and the Inglenook (formerly Rubicon) Estate in Rutherford (Napa).

Interestingly, while the Francis Ford Coppola Winery (only) dates back to the 1970s, the Inglenook Estate has a rich history dating back to the late-1800s.  As reported in a 2013 San Francisco Chronicle article (see below source), Inglenook has been a restoration project of sorts for Coppola: buying back land that had been previously sold off, reacquiring the name for production, etc.  While the estate's history is rich, its fragmentation had been considerable... but Coppola has done a great service to Napa Valley with his efforts at unifying the property's historical assets.  He remains committed to producing a high-quality Napa Cabernet there!

Interestingly, Coppola is not afraid to leverage the appeal of his identity as a movie director in the marketing of his wines: e.g. his "Director's Cut" label for wines from his eponymous estate in Sonoma.
